what are my prospects for pitching a feature about the US Social Forum, focusing on the challenges of, and the potential for building a broad alliance of social justice and environmental activists ?
Greater specificity likely will emerge as I communicate with people as a reporter at the forum. But I intend to focus on food issues, getting dirty and sweaty at some community gardens in Detroit as an aspect of my reporting.
Obvious to you, though not to the general public is the intersection of environmentalism and social justice in the causes of food justice and food sovereignty.
I am aware of a two- part FSRN web special a little while back—maybe a few months ago– about the US Social Forum, but I didn’t find anything more recent when I searched this afternoon. Perhaps I am not using the search function correctly, but to my knowledge, FSRN also hasn’t reported on the March to Fulfill the Dream, from New Orleans to Detroit.
I intend to be in the latter city next Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. But I may be able to stay longer if I have a good reason.
As a reminder, I would like to report on some of the ways to promote a non-fossil-fuel-intensive way of life. (I’m finishing up with a local project within a few days, so I will have more time for forming my pitches.)
The number of stories related to getting past fossil fuels are virtually limitless. And ‘food justice’ along with ‘transportation justice’ are only some of the many ways that environmentalism connects with social justice activism.
Though obvious to you and many activists, that connection doesn’t seem apparent to the general public where we find the stereotype of the White, financially well-off environmentalist.
I relate to journalist and author Raj Patel when he disagrees with the Margaret Meade quote about a small group of people changing the world. A massive numbers of people are required, in my opinion. A cadre won’t by itself, make it happen. That’s where media can help.
