To what extent are people thinking that/acting on the idea that the global recession is a reason for/against investing into making societies more sustainable?

What about the talk-show host, Mark Levin’s claim that environmentalists undermine energy independence, and therefore undermine US national security and, with that, our society’s standard of living and the U.S. way of life?
