I’m using some of that house-work-and-Packard-Electric-sweat money to build my own pedicab, probably registering it as an LLC. Some fares say it makes me a capitalist. But I don’t expect anytime soon to employ an army of lobbyists or to have death squads–backed by the U.S. and other governments— killing, in exploited countries, trade unionists and people defending their land and other resources.
Inspired by rickshaw drivers in countries such as Bangladesh and India, I intend to make my cab–for lack of a better word–‘ornate.’ Similarly, growing some food on my rented property and on properties leased from the city, I can at least conceptualize solidarity with some of the folk of the Global South. As growing segments of the folk in India and China aspire to materialistic and consumerist lives, and a movement for ‘voluntary simplicity’ emerges among some of us in the U.S. and other wealthy nations, things might get interesting.
