Nuns on the Bus visit Columbus Ohio

During the Nuns on the Bus stop at the Universalist Unitarian Church in Columbus, Ohio, I asked Simone Campbell about the role of love in social justice movements.

“Pope Benedict XVI in Charity in Truth is all about love being the root of all social justice movements. If we’re not engaged in love, then how can we want justice? What he says is that once you love people and the world, justice becomes required, and you can’t turn your back on justice. After you do justice, then you can do charity. Charity comes way down the line. So, first turn your heart to love. People who are afraid can’t love, because they’re all closed up in themselves.”

During her presentation, she talked about ‘radical acceptance.’

“Love is about radical acceptance, knowing that we’re all a piece of God. We’re all together.”

She said love involves fighting.

“But we struggle not in opposition to each other, but to see a deeper truth. Good and evil is as much in me as it is in you.
