I don’t think anyone knows for sure what will happen in the future. But we can use our intelligence to get a sense of the probable consequences of failing to effectively address destructive social and ecological trends. —–We might like to cite the example of the 98-year-old who’s fit and sharp, and is a heavy drinker and heavy smoker who never exercises and eats a lot of greasy fried food, and regularly drives without his glasses. —-But despite such freak anecdotes, the rule of odds in light of patterns shapes our fate much more than inexplicable exceptions.—-Applying that to the life-support system we call Earth, there are so many problematic ecological trends, (bees, aquifers, biodiversity, climate change…) that it’s possible, but unlikely that none of them will come to a head, and thereby adversely affect our ability to thrive and survive.———– Thru a philosophy of daily life based on loving kindness, I’ve improved at facing these facts without fear and without fatalism.
