Mary Jo Kilroy on internet freedom

Regarding internet freedom, Kilroy said she opposes measures such as SOPA and its counterpart in the Senate, PIPA.

“I’m sympathetic to writers and artists and others who create what we call intellectual property. But selling SOPA as a way to protect those artists was wrong. SOPA presents some real dangers to the freedom and democracy that is the internet. The internet, as we have seen, has been used so well, whether it’s in Iran for the movement for democracy there, or in Egypt and all around the world, or whether it’s in this country. The internet has been a vital place for the exchange of ideas. That soapbox will reach far more people than we’re going to reach in this gathering today. So, we’re able to talk to them about Citizens United and about corporate control of our democracy.”

She said opposition to SOPA and PIPA people have exercised thru the internet shows “what we can do as activists when we focus and engage and let our voices be heard.”
