I’ve yet to read the Secret Life of Plants, but the claim that food animals are sentient stands on much firmer scientific ground than the claim that plants are sentient, given the former have nervous systems.
Even if we assume the unproven claim that plants are sentient, it may be the case that our industrial model for an omnivore diet kills more plants than either (1) a non-industrial omnivore diet; and/or (2) an industrial vegan diet; and/or (3) a non-industrial vegan diet.
If that’s the case, then a boycott of factory farmed animal products would require us to be at least situational vegans, given how the vast majority of meat, eggs, and diary is factory farmed.
As for whatever tensions there may be between, on the one hand, the slow, organic, local food folk; and, on the other hand, animal liberationists, we should forge common ground in opposition to factory farms and common ground on other eco fronts.
