Wanting to be like ‘ God ‘or wanting to be ‘God’ would not make sense to an atheist because we believe godhood is not possible for any conscious entity, most certainly including humans. —
My inner peace comes from accepting how small my individual life is, as a member of one species on Earth, which, like millions of other species, will likely be extinct sooner or later. —
My inner peace also comes from accepting that my consciousness is temporary. The incomprehensible vastness and complexity of the universe fills me with joyful amazement.
With the best science humanity can muster, we can only understand fragments of the order in nature.
In my opinion, we are more likely to create loving societies and communities if we are honest about the limits to human knowledge instead of using mythology to try to full those huge gaps regarding what we actually know.
How do you distinguish what you know from what you believe? Why is ‘surrendering to Jesus’ important? If ‘surrendering to Jesus Christ’ brings extraordinary peace of mind and spirit, why have so many people done extremely unkind things to their Earthly brothers and sisters in His name?
To compare notes, I’ve known more peace of mind and spirit as an atheist basing my life on love than I did as someone seeking to worship a Judeo-Christian god.
Due to its emphasis on obedience and belief, religion lends itself to authoritarianism. And religion’s emphasis on good and evil spirits battling for control over our lives goes against human freedom and responsibility.
In my opinion, the open-minded and honest pursuit of truth combined with empathy, love, and compassion is virtuous, not obedience nor belief.
